Brazil Celebrates 50 Years of Relations with China with Call for Greater Trade Expansion

Brazil’s Vice-President, Geraldo Alckmin, reaffirmed his commitment to promoting an increase in trade with China, emphasizing its steady growth since 2008, during an event commemorating the 50 years of bilateral diplomatic relations.

Alckmin, also Minister of Industry and Foreign Trade and who is visiting China, highlighted on Wednesday the fact that Brazilian exports to China exceeded USD 100 billion (R$ 523.1 billion) for the first time last year.

In addition to calling for an increase in Brazilian exports to the Asian country, the vice-president also praised the joint work of the two countries on the three major issues facing the planet today: food security, energy security and climate security.

According to Alckmin, the relationship between Brazil and China, the South American country’s largest trading partner since 2008, is an example of success, friendship, partnership, trade and investment.

The Chinese market was the destination for 30% of Brazil’s exports in 2023, with sales to the Asian country totaling USD104 billion (around R$544 billion), mostly made up of food and raw materials.

China’s investments in Brazil have totaled around USD40 billion (around R$209.2 billion), with a notable emphasis on the energy sector in recent years, where the Asian country is determined to increase its presence.

During the event, China’s ambassador to Brazil, Zhu Qingqiao, praised the agreement between the two countries on the main issues on the global agenda, particularly, the vision that currently guides the work of the Group of Twenty (G20), which, chaired this year by Brazil, is debating, among many other points, “the need to create a fairer and more equitable system of global governance”.

The Chinese diplomat framed these demands in the “spirit” that guides the BRICS forum, founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, which, since 2009 has advocated for greater representation of emerging and developing countries in international organizations.
