Cabo Verde and China will strengthen cooperation in the health sector under a new deal, with the African country receiving more Chinese doctors and donations.
The two countries signed a new collaboration protocol for sending and receiving future Chinese medical missions, with the aim of strengthening the response capacity of the African country’s health sector, which will receive a donation of medical equipment worth EUR 43.000 to the Agostinho Neto University Hospital (HUAN).
The Minister of Health, Filomena Gonçalves, highlighted the crucial role of the Chinese doctors specializing in various areas of intervention in the country, as well as the presence of specialists in intensive care units. The Minister also emphasized the importance of the materials for the operating room, orthopedics and obstetrics, delivered by China, which will strengthen HUAN’s capacity to offer effective responses to health challenges.
China and Africa Vow to Bost Cooperation Under Belt and Road Initiative
China’s Ambassador to Cabo Verde, Xu Jie, praised the significant advances in collaboration between the countries and the relevant role of the protocol in laying the foundations for cooperation in the area of health from 2024 to 2029 and marking a new chapter in bilateral relations.
The training and academic exchanges are living proof of the continued expansion of cooperation in the field of health and the friendly exchanges between the two countries, Xu Jie mentioned.
2024 marks the 40th anniversary of health cooperation between China and Cape Verde, which includes the construction of health infrastructure, technical cooperation and the sending of medical teams, the donation of medical equipment, the training and capacity building of health professionals in different areas, scientific exchanges between hospitals in Cabo Verde and China, health research, among others.
