Chinese Imports of Brazilian Beef Fall

Chinese imports of Brazilian beef fell in May, 11,8% compared to the same period in 2023, and 3.12% less than the previous month, to 97,86 thousand tons.

While the total exports by Brazil grew in May, the Chinese reduced the imports of beef in the same period, reports Agrifatto, based on data released by the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex).

With the fall in the Chinese purchases, the Asian country’s share of the total exported by Brazil reached 46.17%, 2.38 percentage points less than the share in April and the lowest level since April 2023.

According to Agrifatto, other countries also continue to increase buys of Brazilian meat, which explains, in part, the slowdown in sales to the Chinese market.

During the month of May, the consultancy reports, the largest growth in export volume (of Brazilian meat) came from the US, Egypt and Turkey, which increased their purchases by 5,61, 2,88 and 2,52 thousand tons, respectively.

According to Agrifatto, from January to May 2024, countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Algeria and the Philippines also increased their purchases of Brazilian beef, causing Brazil to reduce its dependence on Chinese imports.
