Huawei Cleared for Participating in Brazil 5G Auction

The 5G auction in Brazil will not restrict specific companies from participating, as the previous United States Government wanted to be done with Huawei, Communications Minister Fábio Faria said.

The Government decree does mandate the national telecom regulator, Anatel, to guarantee a secure network for the government and the Armed Forces, Faria told O Globo website.

“Especially in the Brasilia area, where the secure network for government and the Armed Forces will be mobile, and [there will also be] a fixed network for the rest of the country,” he said.

Last year, Brazil joined the Clean Network, an initiative from the previous U.S. Administration to halt the advance of Chinese technological companies in third countries.

The Government decree comes days after a rapprochement between the governments of Jair Bolsonaro and Xi Jinping, with the aim of releasing inputs from China used in the production of vaccines on Brazilian soil.

Resolving a major contention point between the two counries, Brazil’s government will reportedly decided not seek to bar Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei Technologies Co Ltd from 5G network auctions slated for June this year.
