President of Guinea-Bissau Reveals Plans to Build Huawei Subsidiary in Bissau

The President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, wants to deepen cooperation with China in several areas, namely in techologies, and revelead plans to build a Huawei subsidiary in Bissau.

“Guinea-Bissau has always walked hand in hand with China. We have several agreements, including political and diplomatic negotiations, and we have always aligned our positions in order to highlight the relationship we have with China”, the President reiterated during his first state visit to Beijing.

The Guinean President underlined the long-standing bilateral relationship between the two countries, particularly in the fields of technology, agriculture, health and infrastructure, as well as the desire to deepen the relationship, while also highlighting China’s important role on the world stage.

Regarding technology, Sissó Embaló, in addition to having previously received Huawei’s representative in Africa and the company’s representative in Guinea-Bissau, also mentioned the plans to build a Huawei subsidiary in Bissau.

The President also referred to China’s important role in the development of infrastructure, saying that “China has financed, built and participated in the development of infrastructure in Guinea-Bissau and I have inaugurated several projects organized by China and I will also inaugurate the freeway in Guinea-Bissau, financed by China and built by a Chinese company.

As part of the agricultural partnership, Sissó Embaló reiterated China’s growing role in the import of Guinean cashew nuts and, as part of the African country’s agricultural development, the implementation of Chinese methods that allow rice to be grown in both the dry and rainy seasons.

The African President also drew attention to China’s role in African development, pointing out that it is the most present country on the continent, with the largest number of embassies, demonstrating China’s interest in Africa.

Lastly, Embaló also stressed the importance of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), which will take place in September and where Guinea-Bissau will be represented: “all the countries are willing and interested in taking part, because we have always walked hand in hand with China”.
