Profile: Su Jian

Chinese ambassador to Mozambique

Ambassador Su was born in October 1957 and started his career in 1983 as an attaché in China’s embassy in Lisbon, Portugal where he was posted until 1988.

For 35 years, Su has been dealing with Portuguese-speaking countries affairs.

After Lisbon, he was posted until 1993 at the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs office at China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing. After that he was a member of the Chinese-Portuguese Joint Liaison Group that was responsible for Macao’s transfer from Portuguese administration to China in 1999. Between 1996 and 1998, Su Jian returned to the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs office at China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Chinese capital.

In 1998, he was appointed First Secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Guinea-Bissau where he stayed for two years before being placed at the Chinese Embassy in Luanda, Angola for four years.

In 2004, he returned to Beijing to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he was director of Human Resources until 2005, when he was appointed as ambassador of China in Timor-Leste until 2008.

Between 2008 and 2012, Su Jian worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing.

In 2012, he was appointed as Ambassador of China in Cabo Verde where he stayed for four years and in 2015, Su became Ambassador of China in Mozambique.

Su speaks Portuguese fluently and is considered by his peers an expert on relations with Portuguese-speaking countries.

Ambassador Su is married and has a son.
